As an artist I have learned that most paintings go through the garbage stage. Meaning at one point in the life of your painting, you will want to throw it in the garbage! Don't do that. Underneath this colorful painting is a sad black and white painting that never got to show its face because in total frustration and a weak moment, I took my palette knife and covered it... and this beautiful painting emerged. Well, now when the garbage stage is upon me I will have to decide do I persevere and finish what I started or do I take the risk of covering what could be great and create a new idea. So I decided for now that every great idea should have a chance to be finished so with a renewed mind and determination not to fail I have revived my black and white painting on another canvas with a new twist which I think is much better than the first.

There are lots of willow trees here in montgomery alabama and as I started this painting, it wasn't suppose to be a willow tree but when you are working with ink you have to be flexible. So from an ocean painting to a willow tree it becomes... and thats why I love ink.

Ava is the granddaughter of a classmate of mine, Susanne Hill Davis. I chose this little girl to practice my small paintings with because she is super photogenic and she has striking eyes. This came from a photo that susanne had posted on facebook of her playing in the sand and I cropped it as a closeup. This was my first practice piece and I did it in about 4 hours. I am trying to get better at smaller paintings and forcing myself to paint faster. This painting also wraps around the 1.5"edges so you don't need a frame if you don't want one. Rudy is my sisters pet rooster. This little guy showed up on her patio one day with a brother who has met his demise thanks to the neighborhood hawk. So Rudy stands alone hanging out in the garage waking them up at 5 am every morning but they love him. I took this shot of him while he was still in the garage up near the ceiling. This painting is on a 1.5 boxed canvas and it wraps around the edges so that you do not need a frame if you don"t want one.

I took a picture of this flower the same year I took all my animal pictures at the Montgomery Zoo. Sometimes the most beautiful things are hidden at your feet, as was this flower as you walked along the zoo path. I was looking down at my camera to change the settings when I saw her, as if she was begging me to take her picture. Also, the background is acrylic and the flower is oil. Why? you ask? My original intention was for the whole picture to be acrylic, however, I could not get the realistic look I wanted for the flower with acrylic. I still can't blend acrylic to well, so I used oil over the acrylic that I had already painted on just the flower. The background is intentionally not as realistic as the flower so that the focal point of the painting is the flower.

I painted this mural for my church, Morningview Baptist in Montgomery, in the preschool/nursery hall. This was my first large scale mural and it took almost 40 hours to complete. It wraps around to a third wall to the left of this picture but I could not get it all in the picture. I learned alot and hope I get a chance to do this again sometime.

This was my last painting in 2009 and this was an experiment of several different media. I took a gesso board and covered it in modeling paste and then used ink to get the brownish/yellow background. I sprayed it with acrylic sealer and then used purple oil paint to accomplish the see-through look of her face. I love the look and will be doing more of these in the future.

This guy took me a long time to do but he was well worth it. I took his picture at the montgomery zoo last year, he was covered in sand so I decided to go with a blue/gray scale of color for him adding a bit of brown to represent the sand. Also made him in walking mode by painting sand coming up behind and above him. I named him colossus because the first thing my husband said was he looked like he was made out of chrome. The Xmen character colossus is a large man that turns into chrome when he needs to defend and attack, so therefore I thought it was a perfect fit. Hope you like him.

This is a practice piece I did of my niece Victoria. I am practicing small faces with skin tone values. Not very easy for me. My camera makes the dress look blue/purple and it really is all purple and white. The likeness is pretty good but I definitely need more practice. The flowers on the dress turn into butterflies as the wind blows it up.

Growing up on the Gulf Coast, part of summer vacation was getting to eat fresh seafood because it was shrimp and crab season. Fried, boiled or in seafood gumbo this is by far my favorite summer food. So here is my first impressionistic painting of crabs and shrimp. Of course it had to be very colorful and I put them in the sea just before the shrimp nets gather them up. Hope you like it.

First piece in my "Abstract Bone" series

This is a step away from my normal painting. Sometimes the tediousness of painting realism gets to me and I have to do something fast and fun. This is my first try at alcohol inks and I found them to be easy and fun to manipulate. This is my first attempt at true abstract art and even though it is not my favorite thing to do, it is a nice break from realism. I put the colors on an 11x14 gesso board and used my palette knife to make marks and swoosh the colors around. When I was done, I stepped back and realized that the shapes looked like dragonflies and even maybe fossils of dragonflies. So the name became "Dragonfly Bones."

As you already know the rose is my favorite flower and so is this particular color rose. I painted both paintings on 1.5" boxed canvas and the painting wraps around the edges so you do not need a frame if you do not want one. I had a hard time naming these two paintings so I asked for suggestions from my facebook friends and I got wonderful responses. I combined the ones from my friend Missy and my mother-in-law Diane and I love the names. Thanks to everyone.

I posted this earlier in the beginning stage. I had tried a technique of doing a charcoal drawing, spraying it with acrylic, then painting over that. Well what I discovered was that the turpentine diluent that I use with my oil paints actually dissolved the acrylic layer and spread the charcoal like paint. But don't be alarmed, It worked to my advantage on the Indian but to my disadvantage on the flowers. The black was almost impossible to cover up and that is why my magnolias are yellow and pink instead of white. BUT...I like it...its different. This little fellow stands in Ocean Springs MS as a monument that I have looked at all my life growing up there. Hope you enjoy it....you can even buy him if you want to. Well, I couldn't wait any longer. My love of dance had to be painted. I saw a similar painting of dancers painted by Ricardo Casas and decided to do my own version. I am not sure what style I would call this however it is similar to "My Self Portrait". There wasn't any challenges on this piece, I just had alot of fun doing it. If you look at the edge of the mans suit and ladies dress you will see that I made the background color seem like it was engulfing their outfits and the background is painted to have a stained glass look.

"The Clark Grandchildren" 24x36 graphite on stonehenge paper. This is a commission that I just finished. I had several challenges on this one. The first challenge was the girl on the top right had braces on in the picture I was using so I had to draw the teeth without them. The second challenge was the girl on the top left had freckles and I have never put freckles on a face but its not that hard and I am very pleased with my end result. The couple will be getting it tomorrow and I hope they like it as much as I do.

"Grandpa Jones" 11x12 graphite on Strathmore drawing paper. This is actually one of my practice pieces I did in June of 2006. I was looking back on my old work and decided to spruce him up a bit. He did not look this good a few years ago. I did not know that much about value at the time and how important it is to get the darkest of the dark and the lightest of the light on your paper to make realistic pictures, so i worked on him last night while watching american idol and I think he turned out very well. I do not have a grandpa jones, I just randomly picked a picture of an old man to practice wrinkles and folds. Hope you like it.

"Crooked Feather" 24x48 canvas. I am trying something new here. I talked with a talented young artist here in Montgomery and his name is Jared Kelly (you can view his art at www.jaredkelley.blogspot.com), I noticed he draws a black and white of his subject before he actually paints. So I am giving it a try and this is the finished black and white and I used black conte charcoal pencils. This is my first time to ever use charcoal of any kind and found it is very easy to use but a bit messy. However, I love the advantage of seeing my composition before color is added to it. I sprayed it with acrylic matte fixative and I am ready to start painting.
"CROOKED FEATHER" is an Indian Statue that has been a part of Ocean Springs, MS since 1976. The Magnolia is Mississippi's state flower, so I chose it to put in the background. I am participating in the Peter-Anderson arts festival that is held in Ocean Springs this year November 7-8th and he will be one the paintings that will be for sale. This was my first large commission and it turned out very well. I did this in January of 2009. When I accepted this commission I was so nervous. I had never done anything this big or had this many people on one paper. I also had the challenge of finding a surface this big to draw on so that the paper would not be creased or wrinkled. My little drawing table was not big enough. I bought a canvas that was bigger than the paper and taped it to the canvas. I then had to draw and shade while upright on my easel. Another challenge was teeth! I had only practiced one portrait where the person was showing her teeth. I now have no problem with them.

"Daniel" is a 20x24 oil on canvas painted in 2008 and is my first realistic animal painting. I took a bunch of pictures at the Montgomery Zoo in Alabama and Daniel is the name of the male lion there. He was very striking and I knew he was going to be my first animal painting. Eyes and faces are by far my favorite things to draw. I did sell him at my art show last October 2008. And yes, I miss him. Those of you who are artists know the attachment you can have with your pieces.

"JUDY" is an acrylic painting on canvas, 18x24. This is a portrait of my sister Judy and is in the same style as my self portrait. This style is a form of cubism with a little bit of picasso mixed in with a look of stained glass.

"My Mona Lisa"

I think every artist should have a mona lisa and this is mine.
This is my second acrylic painting that is an 18x24 on canvas and it is a self portrait of me. I did not originally intend for it to look like stained glass, however, in the end process it did come out that way. It is my favorite piece and hangs in my foyer.

"Random Exploration"

"Random Exploration" is my first acrylic creation. He is 30x40 on canvas. I did not have a clue or a plan as to how this was going to come out. I had bought some paints from a yard sale and decided I would give it a try and this was the result. It hangs in my foyer. I knew that peacocks were my favorite bird so I sketched the head and tail from a design on a scarf that I had purchased from an arts and crafts fair and then added the celtic designs that wrapped around his neck. I played around with the eyes on the tail and they ended up looking like they were glowing. The background was very plain so I start filling in with the swirls on the bottom and ended up with dots all around. It just goes to show you that not every artist has a reason for painting what they paint, sometimes its just random exploration!

"Guardian Lion"

"Guardian Lion" is the brother of "sleeping Lion" and sits on the other side of the steps of the Knox Hall in Montgomery Alabama . I sold them as a pair at an art show last October 2008. This was also a yellow value study and is a 9x12 oil on canvas

"Sleeping Lion" is a 9x12 oil on canvas painted in 2008 as my yellow value study. This statue can be seen in front of the Knox Hall in Montgomery, Alabama. I painted it from a picture that I took of him and it sold at an art show along with his brother "Guardian Lion" last October.

"Tea Party" is my second oil painting and is a 9x12 on canvas. Our class did a value study and we chose one color and painted the picture with only that color but using the full value spectrum from the darkest dark to the lightest light of that color. I gave this one as a gift.

"Tea Time" is my first oil painting and is a 9x12 on canvas. I did this last year(2008) in a class that I took for a few months to get acquainted with the brush since pencil was all I had ever really used. I hang this in my kitchen and is one of my favorite pieces. The composition is from a photo that was furnished by my teacher in class.

CHARLES SPURGEON

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was one of the most well known Reformed Baptist preachers who lived during the 19th century. For most of his career he served as pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in England. My husband is quite fond of his work and ministry so I sketched this for him to hang in his office.

The work is a 14X17 graphite on bristol board. The composition is taken from one of the many well known photos. Its one of my earliest works. The picture shown is before framing. I completed this work in September of 2005.
